Which kind of crooked is your roof?
The type of crooked decides whether it can be shingled at all.

|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Eave and ridge not parallel | Slight dips, deck firm underfoot | Swayed ridge, spongy spots |
| Usual cause | Framing shifted with age | House moved over decades | Rot, water damage, weak rafters |

Snap your own lines on a roof that is out of square
Never use the eave or the rake edge as your line.
-
Three measurements from the eave
01
Take one at each end and one in the middle.
-
Strike the horizontal
02
Snap a straight chalk line off the best average and set the starter course to it.
-
Square the vertical
03
Use a 3-4-5 triangle off that horizontal for your offset line, not the rake.
-
Course lines up the roof
04
Snap them at the exposure the shingle maker states.
The correction, spread thin
When one end is wider or taller than the other, shift exposure by a small amount over many courses. One big jump shows from the street.
Leftover drift goes into the rake trim and ridge cap, where the eye does not read it. Keep the offset consistent so the cutouts still line up.
Every change stays inside the manufacturer's exposure limits.
Small shifts over many courses
Four spots where the layout gets tested
Rake edge
Trim to a clean line. Do not taper shingles to a sliver.
Valleys
Two slopes meet at an angle that is not true.
Sidewalls
Stepped shingles and step flashing along a wall that is not plumb follow the wall, one piece per course.
Ridge
The last courses land unevenly on each slope.
Mistakes that turn a crooked roof into a leak
Each of these shows up later as a ceiling stain.
- Following the crooked edge
- Over-exposing courses to catch up
- Nails driven into soft decking
- Underlayment skipped or bunched
- Shims used to fake a straight line
Why so many Queens houses sit out of true
Older row houses, attached homes and two-family houses settle over decades. Framing racks, and shared walls pull the roof along. It is common. That is how to shingle a crooked roof on these houses: with lines, not by chasing the edge.
Once settling becomes sagging, the job is an inspection, then sheathing or framing repair, then the re-roof. See what a tear-off and re-roof runs once settling goes structural. MNM Roofing is licensed and insured, and the assessment is free.

What callers ask about crooked roofs
Yes. The eye reads the courses from the street, not the edges.
We measure it on site. If hiding it pushes exposure past the manufacturer's limits, the framing needs work first.
It can. Shingle makers require a solid deck, and soft decking puts coverage at risk.
Call before the first bundle goes up.
We will measure the roof, check the deck and tell you whether it can be shingled as it is.
